Anxiety Disorder and Anti-Anxiety Treatments
Anxiety is widespread
Who among us is not at one time or another has something to worry about. Whether it’s studying for upcoming exams, first dates, focusing on work projects, preparing important speeches, or dealing with the stresses of everyday situations, no one is excluded. The number of Americans who feel anxious or tired has increased recently. It is estimated that around 40 million Americans aged 18 and older suffer from one or more anxiety disorders in a given year – which gives way to fear and uncertainty.
However, not all anxiety is dangerous – because the fact is that it is a normal reaction to stress that helps us overcome some stressful situations. This can be a great coping mechanism. Only when anxiety continues and becomes uncontrollable, is it no longer dangerous and becomes a disabling disorder and if left untreated it can become more debilitating.
Not infrequently these disorders are combined with other physical or mental conditions, including substance abuse or alcohol, which can cause irritating symptoms or in some cases mask symptoms. Therefore, it may be necessary to treat these diseases before fighting anxiety disorders.
The five main types of anxiety disorders are:
l. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) – This is the most common anxiety disorder, and at any given year more than 6.8 million adults in the US – women are twice as likely to be attacked. Although it is a gradually emerging disorder, it appears to be at its highest peak during childhood and middle age. It is believed that biological factors such as background, family, and events in one’s life experience contribute to this disorder.
2. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) – This is a necessity when individuals use rituals to control a persistent and irritating mind.
3. Panic Disorders – Whether when you experience a terror attack suddenly accompanied by sweat, weakness, palpitations, fainting, dizziness or all of the above, is instigated by a fear of impending doom or loss of control.
4. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) – This is to avoid experiences that might have developed as a result of a frightening event, which might have involved physical harm, whether for yourself or loved ones
5. Social Phobia (or Social Anxiety Disorders) – It is when individuals become overly excited or anxious and very self-aware in everyday social situations, accompanied by shame and fear of being judged by others.
Luckily, there are numerous tools available in the treatment of anxiety disorders. Some of these include anti-anxiety drugs, psychotherapy or both. However, anti-anxiety drugs alone will not cure anxiety but can help control them while waiting for psychotherapy. Many people practice relaxation techniques, and herbs in combination with these treatments and some choose to then independently.
Regardless of what treatment options you are looking for, there is no need for individuals to suffer from anxiety-related disorders. Although these disorders may begin to be quite innocent, they can cause severe physical and psychological health problems.
